We highlight the benefits of including your organisation’s commitment to tackle domestic abuse and the actions you are taking in recruitment material. We spoke to EIDA Beacon, Collinson, about why they chose to do this.

Three reasons

1 - More potential employees now recognise the important role of the employer in safeguarding the wellbeing of their employees and responding to domestic abuse among their workforce as part of an employer’s duty of care. Incorporating your organisation’s work to tackle domestic abuse in promotional and recruitment material shows that you take this duty of care seriously and that you are fostering a work culture where domestic abuse is not tolerated and those impacted by it are supported.

2 - With one in four women and one in six/seven men experiencing domestic abuse in their lifetime, it is likely that many of the people interested in joining your organisation will have been directly impacted by abuse. Making clear your approach to domestic abuse in your recruitment materials can reassure people about where your organisation stands on domestic abuse and how employees who disclose abuse are supported.  It also sends a broader message about your values as an organisation.

3 - More people are becoming aware of the need to make a systematic change to the way domestic abuse is thought about and handled in the UK and around the world. Including your actions on domestic abuse in information about your own employee wellbeing programme (as well as any work you may be doing in the community) lets potential employees know what you are doing to break down the wall of silence that currently exists around domestic abuse and positions you at the forefront of this culture change.

Jane Barr, Social Impact Manager at Collinson said:

“We wanted to make potential new employees aware of our Domestic Abuse Advisors because if we all start to raise awareness, and create the right environment, it will make it easier for people to take that first difficult step. That can only be a good thing.

“This is a way to show potential new joiners that Collinson has an important role to play in creating a work environment where people can talk about their experience or reach out for help.”

Thank you to Collinson for collaborating with us on this feature.
